Part of the BATS Project – Baltic Sea Region Active Mobility Solutions
A collaboration of municipalities, public authorities, three universities, and a cycling association is working together to design and implement policies, infrastructure, and campaigns that effectively promote walking and cycling in poor lighting and weather conditions. This initiative will result in healthier citizens and a greener mobility system. In Denmark, Kalundborg Municipality and Gate 21 are participating in the BATS project, which focuses on year-round cycling and walking efforts.
Through insights gained from testing concrete solutions in participating municipalities, the project will develop a toolbox of recommendations and tools to assist mobility planners in improving infrastructure and traffic systems, making it easier for citizens to choose cycling and walking year-round. Additionally, the project will produce a guide for citizen involvement to support planners in engaging communities in year-round walking and cycling.
The motivation behind the project is the significant drop in walking and cycling during the darker, colder months. Traditionally, mobility and road planning have been designed with cars in mind, and planning for cyclists and pedestrians is often tailored to daylight and warmer weather conditions. For cycling and walking to remain viable alternatives throughout the year, they need to be safe, secure, and appealing in all seasons. That’s why the partners in the BATS project are focused on enhancing mobility planners’ understanding of the benefits of active mobility year-round.
